Reflux surgery refers to surgical interventions intended for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a condition in which stomach contents get back into the esophagus, which may cause stomach acid to damage the esophagus.
Reflux surgery is generally performed in two main types:
1. Fundoplication: In this procedure, the fold in the upper part of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped around the esophagus, and this helps to diminish reflux by avoiding the stomach contents from getting back into the esophagus.
2. Cruroraphy: It is the surgical narrowing procedure of the opening where the esophagus comes out of the diaphragm muscle and enters the abdomen. It is performed along with fundoplication and laparoscopic technique.
Reflux surgery is usually implemented to patients with reflux or gastric hernia who cannot be controlled with drugs or do not respond to drugs.
